Meet the opposition | Watford
As Swansea City get set to face Watford on Tuesday night, we take a closer look at the Hornets.
What’s their story?
Established in 1881 as Watford Rovers, the club changed name to its current moniker in 1898.
Affectionately known as the Hornets or the Golden Boys, Watford gained Football League status in 1920 and, after spending 60 years in the lower divisions, gained promotion to the top-flight for the first time in 1982.
Under the ownership of Elton John and management of Graham Taylor the club finished as runners-up to Liverpool in that maiden First Division campaign.
In a golden era for the club, they spent six seasons in the top-flight, and reached the FA Cup final in 1984. Recently, Watford have competed in the Premier League in six of the last nine seasons, but the Hornets have also become synonymous with managerial upheaval, going through a succession of head coaches in recent years.
Their latest change came when Alessio Dionisi succeeded Edward Still in June, who managed just 12 games at the helm.
How’s their form?
The Hornets have made a positive start to the Championship season, picking up five points from their opening three games.
Despite bowing out of the Carabao Cup at the second-round stage, the club earned an opening-day win over Southampton before picking up further points against Wrexham and West Ham United - the latter coming at the weekend.
Who’s the gaffer?
Alessio Dionisi was appointed Watford head coach in June 2026, bringing extensive experience from Italian football.
A former centre-back, Dionisi moved into coaching in 2014 and worked his way through the divisions, enjoying spells with Imolese and Venezia before joining Empoli.
He guided Empoli to the 2020/21 Serie B title and promotion to Serie A, before taking charge of Sassuolo and spending two-and-a-half seasons in Italy’s top flight.
Dionisi later returned to Serie B with Palermo and Empoli before making the move to Watford.
Who’s the captain?
Mattie Pollock is Watford’s current club captain, having joined the Hornets from Grimsby Town in 2021.
The centre-back came through the Leeds United academy before making his senior debut for Grimsby at 17, going on to make 58 appearances for the Mariners.
After loan spells with Cheltenham Town and Aberdeen, Pollock established himself at Watford and enjoyed a breakthrough 2024/25 campaign, making 47 appearances.
He followed that with 36 appearances last season, surpassing 100 games for the Hornets and being voted the club’s Player of the Season.
Who are the key men?
Luca Kjerrumgaard will be one of the players Swansea will need to keep a close eye on after making a strong impression since joining Watford.
The 6ft 4in striker initially arrived on loan from Udinese in July 2025 before making the move permanent this summer.
After scoring 22 goals in 29 games for Odense BK in 2024/25, Kjerrumgaard found the net nine times in his first season at Vicarage Road. The Denmark Under-20 and Under-21 international has already opened his account this term.
Othmane Maamma is another key player to watch, with the versatile winger capable of operating on either flank.
The Moroccan joined Watford from Montpellier in July 2025 after coming through their academy and making 14 Ligue 1 appearances.
He arrived at Vicarage Road after helping Morocco win the 2025 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, where he was named the tournament’s Golden Ball winner.
Maamma made four goals and an assist during his debut Watford campaign, while his performances earned him the club’s Young Player of the Season award.
