Swansea City Under-21s' midfielder Mitchell Bates has signed a new contract through to the summer of 2025.

The 20-year-old has put pen to paper on a deal that includes the option of an additional 12 months through to 2026.

Bates returned to the club in February 2023 from Briton Ferry Llansawel, following a successful trial. He becomes the latest promising academy player to extend his stay with the Swans, with Filip Lissah and Aimar Govea having done so recently.

Bates had previously had a stint with the Swans before spending five seasons with Briton Ferry, where he made the breakthrough to senior football last term before re-joining Swansea.

Anthony Wright, who has coached Bates from grassroots level, said "Having gone from playing locally for grassroots club West End, before moving onto Britton Ferry aged 16 and quickly becoming part of their first team, Mitch has excelled.

"Since joining the under-21s midway through last season, he has shown improvement in all areas; technically, physically, tactically and personally.

"He has progressed to become a regular starter, in fact he has been ever-present this season, highlighting the consistency of his performances, and been handed the captain’s armband on occasions.

"This is reflected daily with his application to training, where he always gives 100 per cent, and he deserves to extend his time at the club he's loved since a young boy."
