Mike van der Hoorn | We weren't sharp enough

Mike van der Hoorn felt Swansea City were their own worst enemy as they went down to a last-gasp defeat to Stoke City at the Liberty.

Steve Cooper’s side started the day top of the Championship going into a game against a Stoke team which had not won in their opening 10 matches.

And when Andre Ayew fired the hosts ahead after just 53 seconds, the Swans were on course to back up their midweek win over Charlton Athletic.

But former Swan Sam Clucas levelled before sub Scott Hogan struck a late winner for the hosts.

And van der Hoorn felt the Swans failed to hit their heights as they dropped to fourth in the Championship.

“Overall, throughout the whole game we didn’t look ourselves and to be fair to Stoke they were the better team,” said the Dutchman.

“This should have never happened because if you are 1-0 up against a side that is bottom of the league, we shouldn’t even give them a sniff of a win.

“We weren’t sharp - we need to be physically and mentally ready in every match we play. Stoke have great players and you can see that.

“If you let them believe they can win the game, they will go for it and that is what they did. They deserved to win.

“We are still quite high up the table but we need to stop teams scoring against us so late on in matches. This result shows that we are not quite there yet.”
