Head coach Luke Williams has urged defender Nathan Wood to remain hungry to develop and improve after confirming Swansea City have taken up the option to extend the defender’s contract by an additional 12 months.

Wood is approaching the end of his second season with the Swans, having joined from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2022.

He made a big impression in SA1 last term and – having returned from a lengthy spell on the sidelines – has been in fine form over recent weeks.

Williams rates the England Under-21 international very highly, and believes he has the attributes to succeed provided he keeps to show the right attitude and mentality.

“He is going to be a top player. He is nearly there, but he has a little bit to go,” said the Swans boss.

“There is a lot to like about him, he has a big-dog mentality. He is a young, fearless guy.

“He has all the attributes, he can be smooth with the ball and nasty without it, he is quick, he takes responsibility.

“There are a few decision-making elements, and being at it every minute, those are the challenges for him.

“We have taken up his option for another year. It gives us some breathing space and protects us a little bit, he is a player we really believe in.”
