Swansea City head coach Steve Cooper has confirmed new signings Rhian Brewster and Marc Guehi are in contention to make their debuts in Sunday’s South Wales derby.

Liverpool striker Brewster and Chelsea defender Guehi have joined the Swans on loan to the end of the season, and have been training with their new team-mates in the build-up to Sunday’s 109th instalment of the local rivalry at Cardiff City Stadium.

And Cooper will have no hesitation in selecting either of the 19-year-olds when it comes time to make the final call on his 18-man matchday squad.

“I wouldn’t bring them here if I did not think they were capable of playing in any game in the Championship,” he said.

“I know Sunday is different, but that’s part and parcel of a Championship or Football League experience.

“Each game has a different context to it, obviously the next one is a big one but if I did not think players could handle it, I would not bring them here.”

Charlton Mike van der Hoorn

The Swans are also waiting on the availability of defender Mike van der Hoorn.

The Dutchman suffered a recurrence of a knee injury in the win over Charlton, and will be given as much time as possible to prove his fitness ahead of the clash with the Bluebirds.

“We will know more on Saturday, we will give him every opportunity to be fit,” added Cooper.

“We certainly do not need to rush things with him, he has more than enough games and minutes under his belt.

“He will not lose fitness or any rhythm to his game. We will see how he is tomorrow but hopefully everyone will be fit.”

Meanwhile, Joe Rodon and Jordon Garrick are drawing nearer to a return from their respective ankle and hamstring problems.
