Numbers game: Swans v Saints

8th May
First team

It is time to check out the numbers as we look ahead to tonight’s crucial Premier League clash between Swansea City and Southampton at the Liberty Stadium.

Both sides know victory would give them a big chance of securing survival on the final day of the season.

SWANS

7 – The Swans have failed to win their last two home games, the 1-1 draw with Everton and the 1-0 defeat against Chelsea. But their record at the Liberty under Carlos Carvalhal remains impressive, with seven wins coming from 11 games in all competitions.

4 – The Swans do not have a great record against Southampton in the Premier League era, but they have taken four points from the club’s last two encounters.

4 – Jordan Ayew has hit the woodwork four times in the Premier League this season. Only Harry Kane (six) and Marko Arnautovic (five) have done so more often.

9 – The Swans have kept nine Premier League clean sheets this season. That tally is the joint-12th highest number in the division. Southampton (seven clean sheets) are 18th in the list.

65 – The Swans are starting a Premier League match in the relegation zone for the first time since March 3, 65 days ago.

3,240 – Lukasz Fabianski and Alfie Mawson have played all 3,240 minutes of the Premier League season so far.

SOUTHAMPTON

1 – The Saints have lost on just one of their five Premier League visits to Liberty Stadium (W3 D1), keeping four clean sheets. However, that one defeat was in their last visit last season, when Alfie Mawson and Gylfi Sigurdsson were on target for the home side.

6 – Six of Southampton’s last 10 away Premier League victories have been against sides starting that day in the relegation zone.

21 – Only West Bromwich Albion (26) have dropped more points from winning positions than Southampton in the Premier League this season (21) – eight of those 21 have been in Mark Hughes’ six games in charge.

2 – This is the second managerial meeting between Hughes and Carlos Carvalhal – the Welshman defeated Carvalhal in December 2015 in a League Cup tie when he was Stoke manager, winning 2-0 against Sheffield Wednesday.

7 – Charlie Austin and Dusan Tadic lead the Southampton scoring charts this season with seven goals apiece.
