Bafetimbi Gomis struck the winner three minutes from time to hand Swansea a dramatic victory at Villa Park.
The French striker had earlier had two shots saved by goalkeeper Brad Guzan, while Wayne Routledge also had a shot cleared off the line.
Gomis then scored his late winner when he held off Ciaran Clark to convert from 12 yards after Jefferson Montero's low cross.
Former Swans man Scott Sinclair fired a volley over in stoppage time but Villa could not force an equaliser.

Aston Villa's four-match losing run in the Premier League came to an end as they battled to a draw against Swansea.
Villa went ahead through a well-taken Gabriel Agbonlahor strike, but the visitors deservedly equalised when Roland Lamah headed home a Pablo Hernandez cross at the far post.
The Swans were unable to secure the winner, though, with a Jonathan de Guzman free-kick the closest they got.

Swansea claimed their first away win in the Premier League thanks to goals from Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge.
Dyer pounced on Stephen Warnock's poor backpass to give Swansea an early lead, while Andrea Orlandi flashed a shot inches wide in a dominant opening period.
Wayne Routledge doubled Swansea's lead moments after half-time, following up to blast home the rebound when Danny Graham's shot came off the post as the winger registered his first top-flight goal.
Charles N'Zogbia almost grabbed a last-minute consolation but the Villa winger's shot cannoned off the bar.
