As Swansea City prepare to host Barnsley on Sunday, we look back at some memorable previous meetings with the Tykes in SA1.

Swansea City 3 Barnsley 1

League Cup - August 28, 2012

Barnsley Luke Moore

Swansea City claimed a straightforward victory over Barnsley at the start of a League Cup campaign that would end with Michael Laudrup’s side securing the first major honour in the club’s history at Wembley.

The Swans had made a storming start to the 2012-13 season under Laudrup, winning 5-0 away at QPR and easing past West Ham with a 3-0 win in their two games under the Dane.

They took the lead on 24 minutes as top-scorer from the previous season, Danny Graham, knocked the ball into an open net after good work from right-back Angel Rangel, before striker Luke Moore smashed home Swansea’s second after the break.

Barnsley right-back Bobby Hassell gave the Tykes hope when he reduced the deficit on 69 minutes, but Jacob Mellis and Tomasz Cywka were both denied by Swans goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel as the Tykes sought a leveller.

And the tie was put beyond doubt just before full-time when Moore hammered in his second from a tight angle, firing past Ben Alnwick and into the net.

Championship - April 17, 2010

Barnsley Darren Pratley

Goals from Ashley Williams, Shefki Kuqi and Darren Pratley ensured that Swansea City stayed in the Championship play-off places when the two sides met in April 2010.

Coming to the end of a tiring 2009-10 season, Swansea were in pole position to finish the regular season in sixth place, and gain a place in the play-offs. They came up against a struggling Barnsley side who were floating above the relegation zone in 17th at the time.

Williams opened the scoring for the hosts after 29 minutes when he stumbled into a parried Jason Steele save from Pratley’s header, and it got better for Paulo Sousa’s men when Kuqi latched onto Mark Gower’s low cross with a diving header into the bottom left-hand corner.

Darren Moore pulled one back for the visitors when Swans goalkeeper Dorus de Vries couldn’t get anything on Iain Hume’s corner and it fell to the defender, who nodded into an empty net.

Swans top scorer Pratley regained control for the play-off chasers when he placed his shot past Steele and into the top corner from Andrea Orlandi’s cut-back.

Championship - December 9, 2008

Jason Scotland netted an injury-time equaliser for the Swans in a dramatic encounter between the two sides at the Liberty in 2008.

The visitors – who had beaten the Swans on penalties in the 2006 League One play-off final - surged into a 2-0 lead after 56 minutes through a Jonathan Macken tap-in and a Jamal Campbell-Ryce penalty.

But Swansea weren’t to be defeated as Scotland, who would go on to score 24 that season, dragged them towards a point with two goals in the final 25 minutes.

The Trinidadian got the hosts back into the game when he scored on 66 minutes, and went one better when he netted an equaliser in the fourth minute of added-on-time, and ensured the spoils were shared.

Division Two - September 18, 1926

Len Thompson

Swansea Town romped past Barnsley in a Division Two encounter at the Vetch Field in the sixth game of the 1926-27 season.

A hat-trick from John ‘Jack’ Fowler, who would go on to strike 22 times in the season, and a brace from Len Thompson saw the Swans thrash the Tykes in what was only the third-ever meeting between the sides.

Swansea went on to finish 12th in Division Two after a blistering start to that season which they could not quite maintain.

Barnsley, on the other hand, finished one place above the Swans in 11th, their highest finish for three seasons.
