Report | Barnsley U23s 2 Swansea City U23s 1

5th November

Swansea City Under-23s suffered a 2-1 defeat against Barnsley in the Professional Development League.

Despite Ryan Bevan’s first goal at this level, the youthful Swans were unable to leave South Yorkshire with a point against their more experienced opponents.

Jon Grey made three changes from last week’s defeat by Birmingham; handing a debut to Jacob Edwards, while there were recalls for Kai Ludvigsen and Scott Butler.

The Swans fell behind after just four minutes courtesy of Isaac Christie-Davies’ 30-yard free-kick.

However, the visitors responded well and equalised in the 20th minute as Bevan controlled Edwards’ cross before netting with a sweetly struck half-volley.

But the Swans were level for just four minutes after they struggled to clear their area; allowing Dan Bramall to slot home from the edge of the box.

Both sides had chances after the break and although they were unable to drag themselves level once more, Grey was pleased with the response of his players after a poor first half.

“We were disappointed with our first-half performance; it wasn’t Swansea City,” the under-23s' coach said.

“We had players not wanting to get possession of the ball in difficult circumstances, which is something they have to do at this club.

“But we were much-improved in the second half and I was really proud of the players.

“We got possession and cut the defence open on a couple of occasions, but were just missing the final touch.

“For such a young team to have a go and find a way to play against aggressive pressing was very pleasing.”
