There was no winning start for new signings Renato Sanches and Wilfried Bony as the Swans were beaten 1-0 at home by Newcastle United.
Sanches started while Bony was a second-half subsitute for Paul Clement's side, but it was the visitors - playing in the absence of manager Rafa Benitez due to medical reasons - who claimed three precious points thanks to Jamaal Lascelles' 76th minute header.
After the Swans'high-profile signings, it proved a low key game with few chances.
It was the visitors who went closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half, with Joselu seeing his goalbound effort tipped wide by the diving Lukasz Fabianski.
At the other end, the Swans' best effort came via Jordan Ayew, with his powerful drive tipped wide by Rob Elliott.
The Swans made a lively start to the second half, with Tom Carroll being denied by Elliot before Tammy Abraham went within inches of breaking the deadlock.
Leroy Fer's perfect pass sent Abraham in on goal, and he rounded keeper Elliott before seeing his effort cleared off the line by Lascelles.
That proved a crucial intervention, with Lascelles rising highest to head home Matt Ritchie's corner with 14 minutes left.
