Report: Swans U23s 1 Manchester City U23s 3

22nd September

Swansea City Under-23s suffered their third defeat of the season in Premier League 2 division 1 after going down 3-1 against Manchester City at Landore.

Phil Foden struck in the early stages of each half to put the visitors in control before Oli McBurnie’s fourth goal of the season gave the young Swans a lifeline, but Lorenzo Gonzalez’s late strike put the game beyond the hosts.

Man City were searching for their first win of the campaign and took control of the early stages with Tomiwa Dele-Bashiru stinging the palms of Erwin Mulder after just four minutes.

And their pressure paid dividends as they took the lead ten minutes later. Midfielder Phil Foden cleverly swivelled away from a challenge before drilling the ball beyond the helpless dive of Mulder.

The young Swans had plenty of experience to call upon in the form of Leon Britton and Nathan Dyer, who was making his comeback after seven months out with an Achilles injury, and they responded well to falling behind.

A great team move released McBurnie in behind the defence, but a fantastic last-ditch intervention denied the striker the levelling goal.

McBurnie had another couple of chances on the half-hour mark. First, he was inches away from connecting with Tyler Reid’s cross following some brilliant link-up play involving Britton and Jay Fulton before Arijanet Muric came to the rescue moments later to prevent him from finishing Kenji Gorre’s delivery.

Simon Davies’ men started the second strongly and doubled their lead in the 48th minute after a patient move which resulted in Foden firing into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

The Swans hit back and Muric made another good save from McBurnie, but there was no denying the Scotsman midway through the half as he ghosted into the area to guide home Aaron Lewis’ cross.

However, their opponents always looked dangerous on the counter-attack and put the match to bed with seven minutes remaining, as substitute Lorenzo Gonzalez tucked away Benjamin Garre’s cross to seal City's first victory in PL2 this season.
