West Ham report

Divine Mukasa’s first-half strike was enough to condemn Swansea City to their first home league defeat of the season against West Ham United.

Ben Cabango and Ronald were among a number of Swans players to go close as the hosts pushed for an equaliser, but their efforts ultimately proved insufficient to salvage a point.

Vitor Matos made four changes to the side that beat Millwall in midweek, with Adam Idah, Gonçalo Franco, Stephen Welsh and Ronald all returning to the starting XI.

There was little to separate the sides in the opening stages in front of a sell-out crowd, with neither team able to carve out a clear-cut goalscoring opportunity.

However, it was the visitors who broke the deadlock on 33 minutes. Marko Stamenić was caught in possession just outside the Swansea box, allowing Pablo to find the run of Mohamadou Kanté. His eventual pull-back found Divine Mukasa, who fired the Hammers into the lead.

The Swans looked for an immediate response, with some intricate play between Ronald and Franco setting up Idah. The striker’s deflected effort flew narrowly wide before Ronald tried his luck from distance, with another deflection sending his strike inches past the post.

Swansea came agonisingly close to drawing level just before half-time. Josh Tymon’s cleverly worked free-kick picked out Moussa Yeo, whose downward header fell to Ben Cabango. The defender’s strike cannoned off the inside of the crossbar as the Swans pushed for an equaliser.

Joseph Opoku was next to threaten after breaking through the Hammers’ backline, only to go down inside the penalty area. Referee Josh Smith waved away the appeals, and West Ham took a slender advantage into the break.

Lawrence Vigouroux was called into action shortly after the restart, producing a fine save to deny Jarrod Bowen’s powerful effort as the Hammers made an assertive start to the second half.

The Swans shot-stopper was called upon again minutes later, this time keeping out Pablo after the visitors worked a clever passing move to create another opening.

Swansea came close to finding an equaliser on 63 minutes following some excellent attacking play. Yeo drove inside before linking up with Stephen Eustaquio, whose clever flick found Idah. The striker unleashed a left-footed effort that flashed inches wide of the post.

Cabango had another opportunity to draw the Swans level moments later. Yeo’s cross was not dealt with by the West Ham defence, allowing the ball to fall to the Swansea skipper, but he dragged his effort wide.

With 15 minutes remaining, head coach Vitor Matos made a triple substitution, introducing Melker Widell, Elijah Just and Zan Vipotnik as the Swans searched for a late comeback.

In stoppage time, Just’s found Ronald arriving at the back post, but the winger’s header across goal failed to find a teammate as Swansea suffered their first defeat in four matches.
