Report | Swansea City U23s 2 Sheffield Wednesday U23s 2

4th April
Tivonge Rushesha vs QPR

Swansea City Under-23s relinquished a two-goal lead as they played out an entertaining draw against Sheffield Wednesday at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Defenders Joe Thomas and Tivonge Rushesha netted in the first half for the hosts, with both players scoring their first goals of the season.

Wednesday pulled one back through Liam Waldock before the Swans were forced to play the final 10 minutes of the game with 10 men, Ben Erickson was stretchered off the field after Swansea had made all three of their allocated substitutions.

And the Owls capitalised with Bailey Cadamarteri equalising just two minutes later.

The under-23s handed first appearances of the season to under-18s regulars Kai Ludvigsen and Kyrell Wilson, with Ben Hughes returning to the bench following an injury.

Swansea caused trouble from the early stages, Joel Cotterill’s dangerous corner forcing a good save from Pierce Charles in the Sheffield Wednesday goal.

Thomas then put the Swans ahead after just 11 minutes, another Cotterill set-piece delivery finding the wing-back at the far post, giving him a simple finish for his first Swansea goal.

Thomas continued to cause the Wednesday defence problems, his delivery finding the trialist forward, but his effort was deflected behind.

Cotterill had the chance to make it 2-0, with excellent passing play between himself and Sam Leverett sending the midfielder through, but he dragged his effort just wide of the post.

But Rushesha would find the second with a stunning strike, breaking out of defence before firing into the top corner from 25 yards.

It could have been 3-0 before the break, Yan Dhanda sliding Lincoln Mcfayden in before the wing back pulled back to the trialist forward, but he couldn’t turn his effort on target.

Cotterill came close to finding the back of the net once again in the second half, his low effort from the edge of the box striking the outside of the post.

However, the Owls would find a way back into the game with their first real chance of the game, Jack Stafford only being able to clear a cross as far as Waldock, who fired into the bottom left corner.

Substitute Erickson was forced off the field just eight minutes after being introduced, being stretchered off after challenging for a header at a corner. This left the Swans with just 10 men for the last seven minutes plus 11 minutes of injury time, having made all three changes.

And Wednesday immediately capitalised, Cadamarteri converting a low cross at the back post to equalise for the visitors.

Sheffield Wednesday were themselves reduced to 10 men in the 98th minute, Paulo Aguas being shown a second yellow card after a poor challenge on Dhanda.

Despite the Swans dominating for the majority of the game, they would be forced to settle for a point, but maintained their unbeaten run at the Swansea.com Stadium this term.
