Michael Obafemi - Middlesbrough

Swansea City head coach Russell Martin has challenged Michael Obafemi to keep growing and to maintain his hot streak following the striker's latest goal in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough.

Obafemi equalised for the Swans just two minutes after Riley McGree’s goal had put the visitors ahead at the Swansea.com Stadium, Joel Piroe feeding the 21-year-old who cut inside before driving the ball low into the bottom corner.

The goal saw Obafemi notch his 11th goal of the season, scoring eight of those in his last 11 games for Swansea.

Martin admitted the in-form forward would probably be disappointed not to have further added to his tally in an entertaining encounter that saw a total of 32 shots on goal.

But he is delighted with the progression the former Southampton man has made in recent months.

“He will probably be frustrated he hasn’t scored another one or two today because Michael has really high standards, he really expects himself now to score for his team,” said Martin.

“But what he’s doing in possession, how he is as a character, he just took a bit of time. It was a case of a bit of time for him to work us out, a bit of time for us to work him out.

“He has a great relationship with us and the group, he understands what is required and what we want and he’s really bought into it.

“I’m really pleased that he’s getting the rewards for his hard work and his patience, we just need to keep growing with him, make sure we keep improving on the bits he really needs to work on.

“We need to make sure we really highlight and play to his strengths, Joel Piroe is certainly doing that, the connection they have built up has been brilliant.”
