Russell Martin felt Joe Allen’s man-of-the-match performance against Preston North End underlined just how important he is going to be for Swansea City next season.

The 33-year-old set up Joel Piroe for the opener against the Lilywhites, and then scored his first Swansea goal in 11 years when he finished off a sweeping attack.

He was withdrawn to a standing ovation on the hour mark, but later received a red card shown following a confrontation involving the two benches and sets of players.

But there was no doubting the quality of the former Wales midfielder’s display, and Martin believes it underlines why player and club were so keen to be reunited.

"The red card won't overshadow his performance, he was outstanding,” said the Swans boss.

“He's not ready to play 90 minutes yet, the plan was to play 60 against Preston and 60 at Norwich, although that will have to change now.

“But I was so, so pleased with him. After a full pre-season he's going to be a different animal.

“You saw exactly what he is about and what he has always been about as a player. He had so much composure, and that finish for his goal is such a high-quality finish.

“I am so pleased that he scored. I'm really disappointed with how the night ends because all he was trying to do was protect his team-mate and get the attention of the fourth official.

“We need to get Joe ready for next season, he needs a full pre-season and he will be incredible for us next season.

“We have seen it in glimpse this season, he is a great character. We absolutely love him, the fans love him, his team-mates love him and the staff love him.

“He missed pre-season last year after being injured playing for Wales, and I experienced it myself once in my career where you are always playing catch up.

“He has been desperate to come and show what he has got, and to do everything for this club.

“He was desperate to come back, we have been desperate to have him on the pitch and I don’t think we’ve handled him as well as we might have, but that is something we will learn from.

“He is a brilliant footballer and a brilliant character, and I cannot wait to see what he does for us next season."
