Snapshot | Wall of Swans

Swansea City’s defensive wall rises in an attempt to repel a Millwall free-kick at Vetch Field back in February 2001.

This was a season of contrasting fortunes for the two clubs involved.

While Millwall ended up winning the Second Division (now League One) title, the Swans were relegated back to the fourth tier.

John Hollins’s team had won the Third Division championship the previous season thanks chiefly to their formidable defensive record.

But they found clean sheets harder to come by at the higher level, while a lack of firepower was seen as a key factor behind their immediate return to the lower division.

They did manage a shutout in this game, against a Millwall side featuring future Swan Willy Gueret plus notable names like Sean Dyche, Tim Cahill and Neil Harris.

But the Swans, who had Giovanni Savarese and Matthias Verschave leading the line, could not find a breakthrough either and the game ended goalless.

Savarese and Verschave are in the wall alongside winger Stuart Roberts and midfielders David Romo, Damien Lacey and Jason Price.
