Sophie Brisland-Hancocks vs Cardiff Met

Swansea City Women’s midfielder Sophie Brisland-Hancocks is delighted with the position her side have put themselves in at the beginning of 2024, after they earned a place in the Genero Adran Trophy semi-finals.

Brisland-Hancocks made a rare appearance at centre-back for the Swans in the 5-0 quarter-final win over Cardiff Met, having made a 30-minute cameo at the back earlier this season against Cascade.

The 27-year-old helped her side to a clean sheet against her former club Cardiff Met, with goals from Katy Hosford, Stacey John-Davis, Robyn Pinder and Chloe Chivers (2) sealing a convincing 5-0 victory.

Brisland-Hancocks was delighted with a clean sheet, and a 10th win in 11 games in all competitions.

“It’s a great result for us, I thought it was a really good performance, we dominated the game for 90 minutes,” said Brisland-Hancocks.

“We’ve come off the back of a two-week Christmas break and we were straight back into the hard work this week, and that hard work showed in the game.

“We had great momentum before the break and ended really well before Christmas, and we all had confidence that we’d come together and put in the hard yards after the break to keep it going.

“Playing centre-back isn’t something I’d done in a game before, I’ve done it plenty of times in training and I told (interim head coach) Chris [Church] that I’m comfortable to play in a position where he needs me to play.

“I think everyone else has that mentality, you’re on that pitch and starting, and you have to put in that work.

“This run is a massive confidence boost for everyone, the forwards are scoring goals, it’s really important for them and it’s fantastic for the rest of the team to have forwards scoring goals.

“It’s the business end of the season now, and we’ve set ourselves up perfectly, it’s only forward now from here for us."
