Steve Cooper hopes Jay Fulton’s goal against Huddersfield is the start of a sequence where Swansea City’s midfield chip in with their share of goals.

Fulton scored his first goal of the season at the John Smith’s Stadium, lashing the ball high into the net from an acute angle.

Head coach Cooper had set his midfielders the challenge of contributing a number of goals this season.

Of the midfielders playing in central positions, Bersant Celina, George Byers and Yan Dhanda have also netted this season.

But Cooper hopes to see their numbers rise.

“We believe in Jay, he plays a good role for us and he needs to believe in himself,” said Cooper.

“It was a good finish, and it’s something we have spoken to the midfielders about.

“They are technical players who can score, they should be on the scoresheet more as they have licence to go forward.

“We want them to get in the box, we know they can score.

“I know Jay’s goal was a second or third phase from a corner, but he took it well and I think we expect more from midfielders in that part of the game.

“It’s something we have challenged them on.”
