Swans receive Alfie boost

Carlos Carvalhal has received a major injury boost after Alfie Mawson was cleared to return to training.

Swansea City had initially feared Mawson was set for a spell on the sidelines after he suffered a knee problem during the warm-up before last Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup tie at Sheffield Wednesday.

But Carvalhal can breathe a sigh of relief after Mawson was given a good chance of being contention for his team’s trip to Brighton this weekend.

Mawson had been due to start at Hillsborough but was withdrawn from the team after his knee locked.

But after seeing a specialist and undergoing an MRI scan, the influential defender is set to rejoin his team-mates on the training ground ahead of the Brighton clash.

Carvalhal revealed after the Wednesday draw that Mawson has had issues with his knee locking in the past but has always been able to continue playing.

The fact that he could feature at Brighton, who are just a point better off than Carvalhal’s team at present, is a big plus given that Mawson has been one of the Swans’ most consistent performers this season.
