Swansea City Women Under-17s were denied a league and cup double as they lost 5-1 to their Barry Town United counterparts in the South Wales Women’s and Girls’ Cup final.

A Barry side bolstered by the inclusions of first-team regulars Aimee Deacon and Sienna Stone, and with over 50 appearances in the Genero Adran Premier this season across their starting XI, ended up proving too strong for the Swans, despite a Sophia Bevan goal.

Swansea had started brightly as Caitlin Sweeney’s long-range effort was well saved by the Barry goalkeeper in the opening minutes.

Barry grew into the contest, with Opal Rayner producing a fantastic double save after 17 minutes to keep the scores level.

Swansea went on to make the most of the keeper’s intervention and break the deadlock as Bevan fired in a shot from the edge of the box to open the scoring.

But, just three minutes later, Barry would be level as Rayner got a hand to Deacon’s effort but couldn’t keep the ball out of the net.

Barry would go ahead soon after the break, Lucy Coles slotting home to make it 2-1 just four minutes after the restart.

Just nine minutes later Barry extended their lead when Deacon converted from the spot after a foul by Bevan.

Megan Clarke got the fourth goal for the visitors, an excellent curling strike into the top-left corner beating Rayner.

And, deep into added time, Barry were awarded another penalty after a handball in the box. Coles this time stepped up to convert and round off the scoring.
