Swansea City’s Former Players' Association (FPA) has donated £1,000 to the club's former winger Jason Bowen to help with his treatment for Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

Bowen made 160 appearances for the Swans between 1990 and 1995, and was part of the side that won the Autoglass Trophy at Wembley in 1994.

Bowen revealed his diagnosis in February 2023, and he is raising funds to help with the considerable financial costs of his ongoing medical treatment and changes to life at home.

Swansea City joined with Cardiff City – another of Bowen’s former clubs – on south Wales derby day to support Jason and his family in his fight with MND.

The two teams wore warm-up shirts with Bowen’s image and details of how to support him via his Go Fund Me Page, while he received a great reception from all supporters when appearing on the pitch pre-match, and again during half-time.

Since the weekend, a number of fans of both clubs have donated via the online platform, while a further £350 was donated via a matchday bucket collection.

The FPA ha also shown its support with that donation of £1,000, which can be put towards supporting Bowen and his family with the ongoing cost of treatment.

“We were all devastated to hear the news of Jason’s diagnosis. Many of our members were teammates of Jason and we immediately knew we wanted to show our support as an FPA and club," said Catherine Thomas, secretary of Swansea City's Former Players' Association.

“The financial strain of supporting your family while paying for treatment will be massive and we hope this donation will help.

“We are also pleased Jason has become a member of the FPA, and we are ready to offer further support to him and his family.”

Speaking to the club ahead of Saturday’s south Wales derby, Bowen said: “My former clubs and teammates have been brilliant, and to be able to go out on the pitch with both sets of fans and hopefully get a good reception on Saturday will be great.

"I have had a lot of support from people like Andy Legg, Scott Young, Steven Jenkins, Martyn Margetson, who is with the Swans now, and many more.

The Swans have had me down there before and treated me and my family really well on a matchday.

“The cost of my treatment is coming in at about £1,500 every three months, while I also take different supplements every day to try and keep me healthy at all costs.

“My family and I have been fortunate to have great support from so many people in football, and it means a lot to us."
