Brendan Rodgers' side were looking to return the club to the top-flight after an absence of nearly 30 years, having seen off Nottingham Forest in a dramatic pair of semi-final ties.
They faced Reading - Rodgers' former club - after Brian McDermott's Royals had seen off Cardiff City to book their place at Wembley.
