Toshack disappointed with U23s' application

Cameron Toshack was disappointed with the application of his Swansea City Under-23's side in their 3-0 defeat by Leicester City at Landore.

The young Swans came unstuck against the Foxes in Premier League 2 as Ali Reghba scored twice, while Admiral Muskwe was also on target for the visitors.

The hosts struggled to match their second-placed opponents and Toshack admits he expected better from his players.

“Overall, it was a disappointing performance from the team,” the under-23's coach said.

“Leicester pressed us high up the pitch and made it difficult for us to play our normal game.

"But it’s really important that our players recognise that sometimes you have to roll your sleeves up and fight for what you want as opposed to trying to play all the time. Unfortunately, we didn’t do that this evening.

“They had a number of corners in the first half and certainly had the better of the territory. We weren’t able to get the ball down and pass it with incisive movement.

“Far too often, we were playing the ball backwards and invited the press which, subsequently, played into their hands.”

ThThDefeat leaves the Swans four points adrift at the bottom of Premier League 2. Nevertheless, Toshack insists his players are capable of stringing together a strong run of form that will close the gap on the teams above them.

“We know we’re in a challenging position in the league,” he added.

“With seven games to go, we need to try and put some wins together and get some points on the board.

“When we’ve performed well, we’ve been able to challenge teams but it all comes down to application, which was poor today.

“There were positives from the game, particularly in the second half. We started to look a little bit more threatening, got the ball into wide areas and put some good deliveries into the box, but it wasn’t to be tonight.”
