Toshack pleased with first PL2 point

21st August

Cameron Toshack applauded Swansea City Under-23s' performance as the side fought to earn their first Premier League 2 point of the season with a 1-1 draw against Manchester United.

Six of the Red Devils' starting XI held first team experience including England internationals Ashley Young and Luke Shaw as the duo continued their recovery from long-term injuries.

The young Swans shrugged off the maturity of the opposition to take a second half lead through former United youngster Kenji Gorre.

Victory beckoned for the Swans as the U23s continued to frustrate the young United attack only for the home side to level through midfielder Indy Boonen.

Despite the late equaliser Cameron Toshack admitted he was pleased to see the young Swans win their first point in division 1.

“I thought we were excellent,” the Under-23s coach said. “We frustrated them and were difficult to beat in possession.

“Both teams tried to win the game, we defended their chances well and could not have asked any more from our young men.

“To match a Manchester United side that lined up with six players who have first team experience in their starting XI is superb.

“The boys can take real confidence from this result knowing they have matched players who have played at the top level which is what this league is about.

“We have to be happy with a point. It could have been more, some are disappointed about that, but we will continue to work hard to improve.”
