Under-23s finish season with record points tally

24th April

A convincing 4-1 victory against Stoke saw Swansea City Under-23s ended their superb league campaign with a record points tally in Premier League 2 (Division 2).

Two goals in each half from Daniel James and Liam Cullen gave the young Swans a deserved win at the Bet365 Stadium, ensuring the league champions finish the season with a record breaking 52-points.

James gave the Swans the lead midway through the first half as the winger got on the end of Adam Kings’ low cross into the box.

Swansea continued to dominate possession and doubled their lead minutes before half time as James’ blistering pace saw him race through on goal before cutting the ball back for young striker Liam Cullen to calmly slot past Harry Isted in Stoke’s net.

The home side started the brighter side in the second half and pulled goal back through Tom Edwards as the defender capitalised on short clearance from a corner.

But the young Swans retook their two goal advantage just two minutes later as Cullen chased down a hopeful ball before getting the better of Isted to fire into an empty net.

And Swansea made it 4-1 in the 88th minute as James once again calved his way through the Potters’ midfield before firing a powerful strike with some style in off the underside of the bar.

The victory was the U23s 17th of the season, rounding off an impressive title winning season in Premier League 2 (Division 2) with a 77% win ratio.

The young Swans next face Portsmouth in the semi-final of the Premier League Cup on Tuesday, May 2 (7.45pm).
