Vitor Matos | It was another positive step

Head coach Vitor Matos was pleased with the manner in which his Swansea City side rounded off their pre-season preparations with a 1-0 victory against CD Leganés, but insists there is still plenty more to come from his squad.

Joseph Opoku scored the only goal of the afternoon on just his second appearance for the club following his summer arrival from Belgian Pro League side Zulte Waregem last month.

The forward made his home debut alongside fellow new arrivals Elijah Just and Moussa Yeo as Matos' side took another positive step in their preparations ahead of next weekend's Carabao Cup first-round clash with Birmingham City.

While encouraged by the dominant performance against the Spanish visitors, Matos believes his side is only beginning to show its potential and is confident they will make further strides in the weeks ahead.

"I think it was a good game," said the Swans head coach.

"It was good to see that what made us stronger is still there, and that's quite important. The mentality, the character, the commitment and the togetherness were all there to see.

"Pre-season has been important to get the players back in terms of fitness and ideas, and then, step by step, we've been adding the new players. I'm really positive about the pre-season and there were a lot of good things to see from the game as well."

Opoku marked his home debut with the winning goal after Adam Idah’s pressure forced a loose clearance from the Leganés defence, allowing the forward to fire a superb first-time finish into an empty net from around 35 yards.

And Matos was left pleased with the contribution of all three of Swansea's summer signings, who featured.

"It's always good to score, especially when it's your first game at the stadium, so it was really nice to see," he added.

"But I think all of the new players performed well. They're still adapting to each other and understanding how to take advantage of each other's qualities, and that was important.

"Even Cam [Burgess] and Fil [Lissah] played together for the first time today, so that was really nice to see. It's another game, another starting point, and from here we keep building."

Ben Cabango and Stephen Welsh both missed the friendly through illness, but Matos expects both defenders to be available for the start of the competitive campaign.

"Both of them felt sick with a fever and had some sickness as well, but it's nothing major," he confirmed.

Attention now turns to next Saturday's Carabao Cup opener against Birmingham, with Matos eager to begin the competitive season positively in front of the Jack Army.

"It's good to start with a really good game, a proper Championship game, and it's a cup, so at the end of the game one team will move on," he continued. 

"We will fight for that be ourselves, and I think that's quite important for us. We need to have the right mentality to approach the game.

"It's the first official game at our stadium with our fans, and having that feeling is always good. We're really looking forward to it."
