Vitor Matos | It was a really pleasing performance

Head coach Vitor Matos hailed an impressive all-round team performance after Swansea City made it back-to-back wins with a 2-0 victory over Watford. 

Ji-sung Eom and Adam Idah were on the scoresheet as the Swans maintained their unbeaten start to the Championship season and opened a league campaign without defeat across their first four games for the first time since 2020.

Swansea's energy and intensity were once again prominent features of the performance, as was some of the lovely interplay that characterised the two goals.

And the Swans boss was happy to see his side back up their fine showing in victory at Derby County at the weekend.

“I’m really happy. I think we started the game really well,” he said.

“We started really bright, with the right energy and mindset. The intensity was spot on from the off, and our quality in the game was really good as well.

“We knew we needed a strong start. We scored, which gave us the ability to push forward, and then we got the second.

“After that, we started to feel it a little bit with our decision-making. Everything was a little bit slower, and that gave Watford a little bit of a feeling with their counter-attacks.

“But overall, we were really pleased with the performance and really pleased for the boys.

“The boys deserve a huge amount of credit for the effort they are putting in, which is massive, and I’m really pleased with everything.”

Eom opened the scoring with his second goal in as many games, before Idah doubled the advantage before the interval to register his second goal of the campaign.

Matos was particularly pleased with the composure shown by his side in possession and in the build-up to the goals, while stressing the importance of continuing to work and develop their identity.

“It’s something that we’ve been working on for a while,” he added. 

“Some things take more time than others, but we need to find the right consistency over time, and it’s important that we continue to compete.

“That’s what we’re trying to do – compete with everyone and create a clear identity of how we play, which we can be proud of.”

The victory moved the Swans to the top of the Championship table after four games, with the club reaching the summit for the first time since 2019.

But while Matos was pleased with his side’s start, he was keen to stress that there is still a long way to go this season.

“Belief is massive for us and really important,” he continued.

“But we know the table doesn’t mean anything now. There is a lot of football still to be played, and we understand that.

“I’m really happy with where we are at the moment, but there are still loads of games to come, and hopefully we can pick up more points along the way.”
