Vitor Matos praises complete team performance as Swans bounce back

Head coach Vitor Matos felt his Swansea City side had got their rewards for their relentless work-rate after beating Burnley 3-1 at the Swansea.com Stadium.

The hosts had led 2-0 at the interval after Adam Idah and Moussa Yeo took full advantage of errors forced by Swansea’s willingness to chase down and harry the visitors at every opportunity.

A second-half strike from Largie Ramazani allowed Burnley to halve their deficit, but substitutes Ronald and Zan Vipotnik combined following neat midfield interplay for the Slovenian to net the clinching goal.

The win maintained Swansea’s unbeaten home record in the Championship this season, and moved them back into the top two in the early league table.

And Matos was happy with how his side bounced back from their midweek defeat at Southampton to return to winning ways.

“I am really happy with the performance, and with our belief and our desire,” said the Swans boss.

“It was very important for us to show this because against Southampton it was not one of our best games, but also there was not a lot of things wrong.

“It was a case of us understanding why and what we can do better, so that was what we did and I felt today was a very complete performance.

“It was not perfect in all departments, but that is how the situation is at this time of the season so it’s about focusing on where we can improve and our identity.

“The first two goals are part of our idea, and what we really want and work for. The boys were really committed to that. 

“It will not always happen like it did today, but it’s probably one of the best ways to show why we do it and why we keep doing it.”

Matos also had words of praise for Melker Widell, who ran himself almost to a standstill for the Swans, playing out wide and dovetailing well with the likes of Elijah Just and Stephen Eustaquio with and without the ball.

“I love Melker, I have said from the beginning that he has so much intensity and so much desire and commitment,” added the Portuguese.

“Playing in that position allows him to have freedom that he loves, so I am really happy for him to produce that performance and because he helped push the team forward, controlling the spaces.

“It was nice to see and we hope he can keep going.”
