Vitor Matos | The test for us is to be consistent and competitive

Head coach Vitor Matos has challenged his Swansea City side to show the consistency and competitive mentality that have helped them start the season well when they visit St Mary's to face Southampton tonight (7.45pm KO).

The Swans head into this midweek round of fixtures unbeaten in their opening five league fixtures, and sitting top of the early Championship table.

They head to the south coast to take on a Southampton side who have one of the best Championship records in 2026, suffering just three league defeats in the calendar year to date.

It is the latest test in a challenging run of five games in 15 days, and is a quick turnaround on the back of the Saturday night clash with Wrexham in SA1.

But Matos knows these periods are a quintessential part of the Championship, and that the important thing is to have a consistency of approach and mentality.

"I think being consistent is massive, keeping the desire is massive. Not getting frustrated when the game gets a little bit different from what we want is also important," he said.

"You have to stay competitive in the moment, whatever the game and whatever the situation and I think we are showing that.

"The next step is to keep improving, keep using the squad, because all the players will need to be ready to make an impact whether they are starting or coming from the bench.

"That's what we want in terms of togetherness and building that type of culture. We are doing that earlier in the season, but there are a lot of things to work on and improve.

"So the focus has to be on this, on finding the priority of how we want to approach this next game and the challenges we face, because we want to go there and compete and show we can take on the really good teams in this division."
