Vitor Matos | There is a lot we can take from the performance

Head coach Vitor Matos believes there were plenty of positives to take from Swansea City’s performance in defeat at Hull City.

The Swans were beaten 2-1 by the promotion-chasing Tigers at the MKM Stadium after a rousing second-half fightback came up just short.

An Oli McBurnie penalty and a stunning Regan Slater strike gave the home side a 2-0 half-time lead.

The Swans had chances of their own during the opening period and then dominated much of the second half with Liam Cullen pulling a goal back shortly after having a header saved, while Marko Stamenic and Melker Widell were denied by Ivor Pandur in the closing stages.

Matos was pleased with how his side were able to control so much of the contest against a Tigers side who are within touching distance of the automatic promotion places.

But he and his squad know they have to make more of those periods of dominance.

“Hull were very strong in the first half, very aggressive and we had to find a balance and we found a way to compete,” he said.

“But football is about efficiency, and we had the penalty and the another situation where Jay (Fulton) was caught with a stud, he stayed down, the ball rolls back and they score the second.

“We had chances, offensively we had good spells, but we also had time where we were not compact enough to control their speed in the final line.

“Second half was much better. We had much more control and we were much more dominant.

“We had clear chances to score, we scored one of them. We could have scored more, but we didn’t and so that means we leave with nothing.

“But there is plenty we can take from the performance, we just need to find more consistency and more efficiency in our way of playing and that’s what we need to do to compete and get results.”
