Vitor Matos | We have to focus on our own performance

Head coach Vitor Matos insists Swansea City's focus will be on imposing their own game when they face Wrexham in tonight’s all-Welsh Championship clash (8pm).

The Swans host the Red Dragons looking to make it five games unbeaten at the start of a league campaign for the first time since 2019.

Swansea moved to the top of the Championship in midweek after a 2-0 victory over Watford, but the Portuguese is well aware of the threat the visitors will pose this evening, with Wrexham having strengthened their squad further during the final days of the transfer window and beaten Millwall in midweek.

“I think Wrexham are in a good moment,” he said. 

“They probably deserve more points than they have at the moment because they are playing well and playing consistently, and they are quite clear in terms of their idea.

“We saw them against Millwall, which is a really hard place to go, and they put in a proper performance. So we expect a really tough game.

“Of course, it’s a Welsh team, so that makes it different, but we have been preparing well for it."

Tonight’s clash is a home sell-out at the Swansea.com Stadium and is only the second fixture between the sides in SA1 in almost 20 years, following Swansea’s 2-1 victory over Wrexham last season.

Matos is well aware of the significance surrounding the occasion, but insists his players must remain focused on the football.

“It’s a game that means something different, but I think I said we have one derby that is in 87 days, and then we're going to have a game against Wrexham this weekend," he added. 

"That's what we need to focus on. It shows it's a game that there's a lot around, but it's up to us to focus on football. That's what we can do.

"I think it will be a really tough game for both teams. They have a really strong squad with depth. In the last day of the window, or in the last two days, they also made some signings.

"They've kept improving the squad and so have we. It will be a really nice game to watch and, on my side, a nice game to play.”
