Vitor Matos | We were not at our best, but our mentality made the difference
Vitor Matos praised the mentality his Swansea City side showed to secure a 3-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers, despite acknowledging they were not at their best at the Swansea.com Stadium.
Zan Vipotnik netted a brace as he took his goal tally for the season to 15, and moved clear at the top of the list of Championship marksmen.
The Slovenian finished instinctively for Swansea’s first when a poor clearance allowed him to volley home, and he scored the home side’s third with a powerful near-post header from a corner.
In between, Blackburn levelled through Mathias Jorgensen’s close-range strike but Swansea restored their lead when Rovers defender Connor O’Riordan inadvertently diverted a Jisung Eom cross into his own net.
Swansea may not have been as fluent as they have been in some recent outings, but head coach Matos was pleased with how his team were able to adapt and find a way to get the three points.
"It was not the prettiest game to watch, it was a really tough game and I think we were a bit tired," he said.
"But this was a victory of mentality and mindset and togetherness, and that is very important.
"We know every game is different and there are a lot of things we need to keep improving, so sometimes there will be performances that are a bit like that.
"When that is the case you need to find a way to score and to compete and I think we did that.
"There have probably been times when I have been here saying the opposite, that we have played really well or improved our performance but not got the result.
"I think this was the game where we were inconsistent in moments with and without the ball, but at the same time we were organised and had the mentality to win it.
"This is the mindset we want. We got the result we wanted, but not the performance. Now we have a few days to recover and get ready for the trip to Hull."
