We deserved more, says Monk

29th November

Garry Monk felt his side deserved more from an "excellent away performance" following a narrow 1-0 defeat at Liverpool.

In blustery conditions at Anfield, James Milner's 62nd-minute penalty was enough to separate the two sides on an afternoon where chances were few and far between.

Milner converted from the spot after Neil Taylor was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box.

But up until that point and thereafter, the Swans limited their in-form opponents to few chances while Lukasz Fabianski remained largely untested.

And despite defeat, Monk was upbeat about his side's performance but was disappointed that they received no reward for their efforts.

"I feel gutted for the players because I thought we were excellent today," said Monk. "I felt we deserved more than what we got.

"We limited a very good Liverpool side to pretty much nothing, and when we had the ball, we had good spells of possession.

"I have to give full credit to the players. Everyone was working well and they were determined to get us out of this period. I don't think we looked like a team struggling today.

"In periods in the second half we were excellent with the ball. You could hear that their crowd were getting frustrated.

"We had a good game plan. we wanted to frustrate them and then change things for the final 20 minutes and hopefully get a goal.

"It was a very good away performance against an excellent team, but unfortunately decisions went against us today. It was a soft penalty and it was disappointing to lose on a decision that was out of our hands.

"Slight decisions are going against us at the moment. It's only a matter of time before that turns.

"We'll take confidence from this performance and we're confident that results will pick up."

Meanwhile, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was relieved to secure three points following a "difficult" afternoon against an "organised" Swansea side.

"We played against an opponent who were very organised," said Klopp. "It was very difficult for us.

"We had a good start to the game, for the first 20 minutes, but then it was hard work.

"But we got the goal and in the end it was a good result and a good night."
