Yzzy Taylor | It was a complete team performance
Swansea City Women head coach Yzzy Taylor praised the strength in depth of her squad after a 1-0 victory over Barry Town United secured their place in the quarter-finals of the Genero Adran Trophy.
A second-half goal from Maisie Miller proved decisive as the Swans progressed to the last eight, although the scoreline did not fully reflect their dominance throughout the contest.
Taylor's side had two first-half goals ruled out through Miller and captain Jess Williams, while Barry goalkeeper Molly Arnesen produced several impressive saves to prevent the hosts from extending their advantage.
The victory sets up a home quarter-final against Wrexham on December 20, with the Swans continuing their pursuit of silverware.
Taylor was delighted with her side's overall performance and, although she felt they could have won by a greater margin, stressed that progressing to the next round was ultimately the most important thing.
"We are pleased with the result," said Taylor.
"When it comes to cup games, the scoreline doesn't really matter as long as you are the team that goes through to the next round at the end of the game.
"For us, I think we could have probably scored a few more. I thought we were really dominant in what we wanted to do, but we will take the 1-0.
"We had two disallowed goals as well, but we are happy to be in the next round.
"The conditions can be tough, so we had to fine-tune what we were doing to give ourselves the best opportunity to score goals, and I think we came out and scored pretty early in the second half.
"It was a great finish from Maisie [Miller], but after that I was pleased we could show a different side to our game. We changed shape a little bit, and I thought we were really in control of the game."
Miller's winner was her first goal of the season, with the versatile midfielder making the most of an opportunity to feature in a more advanced role.
Taylor was particularly pleased to see the Swans' number seven get her reward after an impressive display.
"It was a deserved goal for Maisie. She always does well for us and is ultra-reliable in whatever role we ask her to play.
"After having one disallowed, I'm pleased she finally got her goal."
The Swans were without Emily Richards, Aimee Deacon and Chloe Chivers for the cup encounter, but Taylor was delighted with the way her side responded in their absence.
With several players given opportunities to impress, the head coach believes the performance demonstrated the quality and togetherness within her squad.
"We were missing three players from the squad. Emily Richards, Aimee Deacon and Chloe Chivers weren't involved, but I think the depth we have now built as a squad was shown, as well as the togetherness.
"All the players give me selection headaches every week when picking the starting line-up and the squad, but they have all done themselves huge favours today, and the overall performance was superb."
The afternoon also saw first starts of the season for goalkeeper Opal Rayner and summer signing Lily Deacon, with both young players making valuable contributions at opposite ends of the pitch.
Taylor was full of praise for both players and believes the experience will be valuable as they continue their development.
"Opal made a big save in the first half and did really well. We know the potential she has, and she is great to have in the team.
"I was really chuffed for Lily to get her first start. I think it's really important for her.
"She has featured in quite a few games across the season so far, and I think she did really well."
With a place in the quarter-finals secured, Taylor is keen for her side to build on the performance and carry their momentum into the coming weeks.
The Swans will now have a weekend without a fixture before returning to league action against Aberystwyth Town, with Taylor determined to make the most of the time on the training pitch.
"Cup games are important to make sure we continue to build momentum." She concluded.
"We will enjoy a weekend off next week, but we will train hard this week and then begin preparations for the game against Aberystwyth."
