Yzzy Taylor | We know where we let ourselves down
Yzzy Taylor admitted Swansea City Women must learn from their 8-1 defeat to Wrexham, insisting her side must take responsibility for the result and respond next weekend.
Hat-tricks from Katie Barker and Faye Knox, alongside goals from Lili Mai Jones and Mikayla Wildgoose, condemned the Swans to their first home defeat of the season and their first loss since moving to the ThermaGlaze Ground.
Chloe Chivers did find the net for Swansea, continuing her impressive run of form with her fifth goal in just three matches. The forward produced another superb finish from outside the area to get the Swans on the scoresheet.
Taylor’s side enjoyed some positive moments during the opening 20 minutes and had opportunities to take the lead early on, which could have made for a very different game. However, Wrexham would go on to open the scoring through Barker before taking control of the contest.
Taylor acknowledged the positives in her side’s opening spell but admitted that the team ultimately fell below their usual standards, emphasising the need to take lessons from the defeat as they look to continue building throughout the season.
“I think it’s a tough one to take. We have to be honest about where we let ourselves down, which we spoke about as a group at the end of the game.
“I think we started the game really well, looked confident on the ball and got into some good areas.
“We moved the ball around well while creating some chances, and I was pleased with how we approached the game." Taylor said.
“There were definitely positives to take from that opening spell, and it was important to maintain that level of performance and concentration, which unfortunately we didn’t do.
“We have to be accountable for both the result and the performance, but it’s just as important that we bounce back from it.
“It’s important for us to manage games, and we look towards our experienced players to help us do that. Collectively, we know where we let ourselves down today.
“We can’t neglect the fact that this result happened. We have to make sure we learn from it and continue to build, but today wasn’t a Swansea City performance that we can be proud of. We must make sure we become better for it.
The Swans will now turn their attention to next weekend’s clash with Briton Ferry Llansawel at the Swansea.com Stadium, with Taylor highlighting the opportunity to respond and expressing her gratitude to the supporters who have turned out in numbers to back the team at home so far this season.
“The game at the Swansea.com Stadium against Briton Ferry will be a great opportunity to respond. We’ve had some great support during the opening games of the season, and we’re really thankful to everyone who has come out and spent their Sunday afternoons watching us.
“We look forward to seeing them at the Swansea.com Stadium next week.”
