Alan Sheehan | We are gutted, but proud of the effort from the players
Alan Sheehan was proud of the efforts of his players despite being “gutted” to see Swansea City denied a point by a last-gasp goal against Birmingham City at St Andrew’s.
Lyndon Dykes headed home in the third of nine minutes of stoppage time to prevent the Swans securing a point and extending their unbeaten run of eight games in all competitions.
The Swans had seen a first-half Zan Vipotnik goal ruled out for offside, although replays suggested the Slovenian had in fact been onside, while the number nine also fired over from a Ronald cross, while Zeidane Inoussa was denied by Ryan Allsop.
At the other end, Lawrence Vigouroux had saved from Marvin Ducksch, Demarai Gray and Kyogo Furuhashi, while Ben Cabango made a brilliant block moments before the winner to deny Furuhashi with Vigouroux down awaiting treatment.
In a game of fine margins, head coach Sheehan felt the Swans had been unfortunate to fall on the wrong side of the result.
“It was a game where we had chances, particularly in the first half,” he said.
“We have also had a goal that is arguably onside and those are the fine margins when you come to a place like this, where you know it’s going to be a difficult challenge.
“In the first half it was nip and tuck, the second half was more stop-start, there were a lot of stoppages.
“In the last 10 or 15 minutes they got a bit of momentum, we put so much into the game and it was that one cross. They had gone a bit more direct and that cross finds a spare man in the box and that’s the moment that decides the game.
“There was not much in it, and again I cannot fault the application and the effort of the players. It’s been a week of ups and downs and, overall, we are gutted with how that game finished.”
