Alfie: We must believe against the big clubs

Alfie Mawson reckons Swansea City must believe they can challenge the top clubs ahead of tonight's Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur at the Liberty Stadium (7.45pm).

Carlos Carvalhal’s reign began in memorable fashion as the Swans scored two late goals to seal a dramatic victory at Watford.

And Mawson hopes the Hornets triumph can lift Carvalhal's men as they go in search of success against Spurs.

“We have only got 17 games left and we need some big results, so we have to put big performances in," the central defender said.

“There are some good players here and we have to confidence in ourselves.

“Even against the bigger teams, we have to pick up some points. It’s up to us to do that on the pitch.”

The Swans are aiming to record their first win over Tottenham in the Premier League, having gone close to doing so in last season’s meeting at the Liberty before eventually losing 3-1.

But they did earn a creditable 0-0 draw at Wembley in September, and Mawson feels the Swans can use that result as inspiration.

He also believes his team-mates should thrive on the pressure of playing at home with the support of the Jack Army.

“It’s at home so we will put pressure on ourselves,” he added. “We have to show our fans that we are fighting.

“We have to get on the ball and be brave. Hopefully that will help us get a result.

“We need to be positive and try to show that we are determined to get out of the situation we’re in.

“We were written off when we played them away and we kept a clean sheet up there. Let’s hope we can do the same again in this game.”
