Coach Anthony Wright was incredibly proud of the application and commitment his Swansea City Under-21s’ team showed in their 1-1 Premier League Cup draw with category one outfit Aston Villa.

Cameron Congreve slotted home the opener for the visitors in the first half, only for the hosts to level five minutes later as Kobei Moore as Swansea rounded off their group-stage campaign.

The Swans will now have to wait on Monday's result between Brighton and Hove Albion and Hull City to discover if they have made the knockout stages, with the Seagulls requiring a win and a 10-goal swing to leapfrog Wright’s side for the runners-up spot in Group A.

Wright was pleased with Swansea’s display against their Premier League 2 hosts, and also praised the performances of 16-year-old Iestyn Jones - who had his first start for the development side - and Kit Margetson, who played his second game between the sticks.

"I'm super proud of the players. The effort and their commitment was top drawer," said Wright.

"We've asked certain players to play out of position, and we had some youngsters in the squad, also making their debuts in the cup.

"I thought Iestyn Jones and Kit Margetson applied themselves brilliantly. Iestyn at right-back could have had a goal, and Kit made some great saves.

"Everyone stuck to the gameplan, it was difficult at times but they all stuck together.

"It was a similar situation to the Brighton game last week, where we looked the better team in the second-half, and could have come away with the win.

"Their keeper made a good save, then we hit the crossbar and they were big moments in the game.

"We didn't want to come in with the disappointment that we faced against Brighton last week, instead we came in with a winning mentality.

"We didn't get the win, but a point may be enough to send us through. We will have to wait until Monday evening.

"And I thought we played incredibly well against a top category one side who play at a higher level every week, the boys should be super proud of themselves."
