Coach Anthony Wright praised an accomplished team performance by Swansea City Under-21s after they booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Professional Development League play-offs with a 2-0 victory over their Newcastle United counterparts.

Thomas Woodward and Blair McKenzie got the goals for the Swans at the Swansea.com Stadium as they booked their place in the last eight of the new competition.

The Swans had chances to add to their tally, but also showed good control for long periods of the game even as Newcastle sought a way back into the game.

And Wright could not have been happier with how his side handled the occasion of facing Premier League 2 Category One opposition in their own backyard.

"It's a huge win for the players," said Wright.

"I am just really proud of the performance put in by the boys, to be fair.

"I thought over the 90 minutes it was a win we deserved. The goals came for us at good times.

"Newcastle started brightly but we defended our box very well, and when we had our first real passage of play with the ball we exploited that and Woody's goal was a terrific individual finish.

"That settled us into the game, we took control and that led to the second goal.

"That gave us a good platform for half-time, I don't think our keeper had been required to make any big saves which was satisfying.

"We dug in when we had to in the second half to keep a clean sheet. There has been a bit of excitement for us as a category two club to face a team with the resources of Newcastle.

"It's a big challenge, but we never took a backward step and we deserved the win."
