Anthony Wright | We didn't take our chances
Swansea City Under-21s head coach Anthony Wright felt the quality of chances his side created in their 1-1 draw with Cardiff City at the Swansea.com Stadium in the Professional Development League should have resulted in a winning outcome.
Wright’s side took the lead through a superb free-kick from captain Dan Watts, but were pegged back shortly after when Jake Davies netted the equaliser for the Bluebirds.
There were plenty of opportunities throughout the contest for Swansea to claim all three points.
Thomas Woodward struck the post late in the first half, while further chances fell to Josh Pescatore and Yori Griffith after the break, but the Swans were ultimately unable to convert and had to settle for a share of the spoils.
The result extended Swansea’s unbeaten run at the Swansea.com Stadium to just under four years, dating back to the 2021-22 season. While Wright was proud of that achievement, he felt his side got too many key moments wrong in front of goal that could have secured the three points.
“The overriding feeling is disappointment. It’s not just about not winning the game - you never want to lose either - but there were key moments in that match that we didn’t get right tonight," he said.
“I think there were plenty of opportunities where we won the ball back and, in transition, had chances to create really good opportunities to score. Unfortunately, we got too many of those moments wrong.
“We also had four or five big chances inside the box and we only really made their goalkeeper work for one of them, which is disappointing. We’re one of the highest-scoring teams in the league and that’s normally something we do really well.
“It does feel like a bit of a missed opportunity given the chances we had. I don’t think there was much between the teams and a draw was probably a fair result overall, but when you look at the opportunities we created the game could easily have been very different.
“It was a well-deserved goal for Dan [Watts]. I thought he was the best player on the pitch. He worked incredibly hard for the team and also showed a lot of quality on the ball. The freekick was a great example of that quality.
"We joke with him because he practices them every day in training and we keep saying we don’t see it enough in games, so it was great for him to score one in the stadium against Cardiff."
