Anthony Wright | We let the game slip out of our hands

Swansea City Under-21s coach Anthony Wright felt“five minutes of chaos” had cost his side dear after they suffered a 3–2 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League Cup.

The Swans fell behind inside the opening minute to Daniel Angel, but grew into the game and created several good chances to equalise before half-time.

Wright’s team came flying out of the blocks in the second half, earning a deserved equaliser through Thomas Woodward before a superb team move was finished by Morgan Bates to put the Swans ahead with 20 minutes remaining.

There would be late drama however, as Wolves drew level through Luke Rawlings before Caden Voice struck in added time, denying the home side a share of the spoils.

Wright was frustrated that, after another strong performance like the one against Nottingham Forest just two weeks ago, his side were again undone late on, denying them a deserved result against a Category One academy.

“I thought the performance was very good," said Wright.

“It was a game that we dominated from start to finish, we knew that we had other gears to go through in the first half and I think we were better than the opposition, which makes the result even more disappointing.

“We went into half-time 1-0 down but we knew there would be opportunities for us. We said to the players at half-time that we were on top but we weren’t playing with enough tempo and moving the ball quick enough and that if we could improve this then we can have a real go second half.

“I thought we totally outran Wolves in the second half in every capacity, we hit the post several times and their keeper made some good saves and then we have a mad five minutes of total chaos and we have allowed the game to run away from us.

“We are Swansea City and we will take the game to everyone that we play and I always believe we should win every game of football.

“When we reflect on the game there will obviously be positives because again we have taken another Category One academy all the way but like the game a couple of weeks ago against Forest, we should be getting something out of it.

“We have let six points slip in the last two PL Cup games - matches where we should have at least taken a point against Forest, and we should have won this game as well.”
