Beynon brace not enough for Swans Ladies

22nd March

Swansea City Ladies' run in the FAW Women's Cup came to an end after suffering a 3-2 semi-final loss to Cardiff City Women in Penybont.
Cardiff took an early lead with a sixth-minute Shannon Evans header following a corner,  but the Swans went in search of an equaliser with Katy Hosford, Sarah Adams and Sophie Hancocks going close.
The pressure finally paid off in the 36th minute as a low shot from midfielder Emma Beynon nestled in the bottom corner to put Swans Ladies back in the game.
Cardiff regained the lead just three minutes later, however, with another headed goal from Evans - this time following a free-kick.
A superb tackle from defender Carrie Slack denied Cardiff from strengthening their lead while keeper Ffion Ashman comfortably saved from a Cardiff corner to ensure they went into the break 2-1 behind.
After the interval, Beynon doubled her tally and scored her ninth goal of the season with an outstanding strike in the 55th minute to level the score once again.
The Swans then looked to take the lead with Jodie Passmore seeing her header just fly past the woodwork while they were denied on a few more occasions by the Cardiff keeper.
But the Swans were dealt a blow with six minutes remaining as captain Alicia Powe was dismissed for receiving a second booking.
And an even more significant blow was delivered in the dying moments as Cardiff were awarded a penalty, which Alicia Davies fired home to secure a 3-2 win.
"After going 2-1 down we fought to equalise but unfortunately we conceded the third and couldn't get back in the game," said Passmore. "We will now pick each other up as a team, train hard and focus on the league."
Swans Ladies are back in league action against Aberystwyth Town Ladies on Sunday.
