Big moment for Swans, says de Guzman

17th October

Jonathan de Guzman believes this week could prove to be one of the most important weeks in Swansea's season.

The Swans are preparing to play three home games in the space of eight days, starting with Sunderland on Saturday, before hosting Kuban Krasnodar and West Ham.

And de Guzman hopes that the Swans can set the tone as they mean to go on with a victory over Sunderland.

"This is probably one of the most important weeks of our season," stressed the Dutch midfielder, echoing his manager's comments.

"It will be a great start if we can win this game against Sunderland, coming back from an international break.

"I think it will be a difficult match for both sides, but it's a game that we should win, and as we are playing at home, I think the three points is mandatory.

"We've been playing good football this season; we just need to score goals. We showed a great example of that against Southampton.

"We are creating a lot of chances and just not scoring, but I think the home fans will help us do that this weekend."

The 26-year-old sustained a groin injury, the other week, that kept him out of Swansea's away trip to Southampton and also out of international action with the Netherlands.

But after a short recovery period, he says he is now fit and raring to go.

"Last week, before the Southampton match, I pulled out of training with a groin injury," said de Guzman.

"It meant I had to pull me out of the national squad too, but I've recovered now, and I am fit."

Despite de Guzman having to withdraw from international duty, several of his Swansea teammates were away representing their countries, including the likes of Michu, who won his first cap for Spain against Belarus.

And de Guzman says the fact that so many Swansea players are being called up by their national sides, goes to show how well the Swans are doing.

He added: "It's a great achievement for players, and it says a lot about our team - doing well in the Premier League and being noticed by your national team.

"For example, Michu did very well last season, and he is doing well this season too, so he got that call-up to the Spanish national team.

"I spoke to him a bit today, and he said it was a great honour to play with world-class players. He says he enjoyed it.

"And for me, playing for Swansea has helped me take a step further in my career in enjoying playing for my national team."
