BLAST FROM THE PAST: Spurs v Swans

3rd March

Tottenham 1 Swansea City 3
League Cup second round replay - Wednesday, 6 September 1978
The Swans caused a cup upset at White Hart Lane as they dumped First Division Spurs out of the League Cup.
Following a 2-2 draw at the Vetch Field a week earlier, a replay was required to see who would progress to the third round.
Swansea led 2-0 in the original fixture, courtesy of goals from Robbie James and Jeremy Charles, but favourites Spurs roared back to earn  a replay thanks to strikes from Glenn Hoddle and Gerry Armstrong.
Spurs were fully expected to win the replay in North London, but it was the visitors who again raced into a two-goal lead.
John Toshack headed in a Nigel Stevenson corner to give the Swans the lead, before Jeremy Charles converted a fine cross from Danny Bartley to make it 2-0 at the the break.
The returning Ossie Ardiles linked up well to set up Ricky Villa to tap home to halve the deficit midway through the second half to set up a tense finale.
But it was Swansea who had the final say as Tommy Smith's free-kick was flicked on by Alan Waddle and Alan Curtis slotted home to send the visitors into round three.
