Cameron Burgess | That win was all about the belief we have

Matchwinner Cameron Burgess felt Swansea City’s dramatic Carabao Cup victory over Nottingham Forest underlined the belief in Alan Sheehan’s squad.

The Swans knocked top-flight opposition out of a senior knockout competition for the first time since 2014 as they fought back from two goals down to secure a 3-2 victory amid wild celebrations at the Swansea.com Stadium.

The hosts had looked to be heading for the exit despite a strong performance when they trailed 2-1 heading into time added on.

But Zan Vipotnik turned in Liam Cullen’s cross to level the scores before Burgess – who had halved Swansea’s deficit with a header earlier in the contest – sent a sweetly-struck volley careering into the net after Ethan Galbraith’s long-range effort had cannoned out to him off the crossbar.

It was a special moment to cap a special night, and Burgess put the outcome down to the belief shared by players, staff and fans.

“I am not sure I have the words to describe it, but that’s why we love football, that’s why we love cup football,” he said.

“There was a big belief in the team, and we carried that into how we performed on the pitch.

“I thought we played really well across the game, they took their chances and that’s what happens against a team with the quality they have.

“But we believed, we were playing well and we knew we just needed to keep doing the right things. In the end it paid off.

“Now we have to continue to work hard, it’s been an incredible night, the fans were wonderful and I hope we can have more moments like that with them.”

The Australia international was typically self-effacing when it came to his winner, which is sure to be prt of Swans folklore in the years to come.

“It was a hit and hope, I think,” he said modestly.

“I didn’t really want to have to run back so it was either going to go over the bar or into the back of the net.

“I took a bit of inspiration from Gally (Ethan Galbraith) and how well he struck his shot because that should have gone in really, but I was glad to see it go in.”
