Charles Sagoe Jr has revealed how hearing head coach Luke Williams' plans for Swansea City convinced him to join the club.

The Arsenal forward has made the move to the Swans on loan for the remainder of the season, subject to international clearance, and will wear the number 24 shirt in SA1.

After excelling for the Gunners' under-21 team in Premier League 2 over the past two seasons, the 19-year-old made his senior debut in a Carabao Cup match against Brentford in September, playing almost 70 minutes of the tie at the Gtech Community Stadium.

It was an important milestone for the pacy winger, and now he wants more senior minutes as he aims to play a big part in the second half of the Swans’ campaign.

There were other options on the table for the promising young player but, after speaking to Swansea boss Williams, his mind was made up.

“I’m really excited to get going. I’m glad the deal has got over the line and I can’t wait to get out on the pitch,” said Sagoe Jr.

“I spoke to the manager and he told me that the philosophy is very possession-based, and the wingers are integral to how Swansea play.

“He wants them to be direct and get lots of crosses into the box, create chances for the team. That’s my game really, creating chances and getting opportunities to score.

“As a winger, I like to get on the ball a lot and help the team as much as I can.

“I don’t mind which side I play. Wherever the manager plays me, I’ll just give it my all. I’ll always put in 110 per cent in everything, whether I’m on the left or the right. I don’t mind, I’ll just give it my all.

“I am comfortable off both feet, which is one of my strengths, I’m quite confident coming in on my weaker foot or having the option to go on my stronger foot. I think it’s something I have in my locker and I can produce it on the pitch.

“I like to be very direct and get at my opponents, get lots of shots off and get lots of crosses into the box. I just try to cause trouble for the opponents.

“I’ll bring a lot of energy to the pitch, and show my talent.

“When I had that conversation with the manager, it put a smile on my face. I just want to help us win as many games as possible and help us climb the table.”

Sagoe Jr knows he has plenty to learn during what is his first senior loan spell.

But he’s excited by the opportunity ahead of him, particularly with Swansea's reputation for given young players opportunities, as he has seen with his Arsenal academy teammate Charlie Patino.

"It was a factor knowing this club gives a chance to young players," he said.

"I feel like when I was watching the highlights and the games that I’ve been tuning into. Charlie has been playing really well, and him being promoted up and playing consistently had a big say in me coming to Swansea because I could see it’s a young squad, and young manager and I just want to be part of it.

"When I get the opportunity, I’m going to take it with open arms and go from there."

There are other former Hale End graduates who are at the Swans, with under-21s' keeper Remy Mitchell chief among them, and Sagoe Jr believes having familiar faces at Fairwood will help him settle quickly.

“Coming from Arsenal to Swansea is a big shift, but the players and staff have been really welcoming and made me feel at home straight away,” he added.

“I’ve spoken to Remy a bit and he only had positive things to say about the club.

“It’s very different to London, but I feel like the boys will just welcome me in and make me feel part of the family. I feel like I’ll get comfortable very quickly.

“I think it’s the right time to go out on loan. I spoke to a few people because I was thinking that this could be the next step in my career and really help me develop my game.

“I’m going to have a lot of challenges, but it’s about getting through it and becoming a better player from this.

“From a personal perspective, I want to get minutes in my legs for the first team and then try to pick up goals and assists.”
