Swansea City Women's interim head coach Chris Church hopes victory over Wrexham in front of a record crowd will give aspiring young footballers reason to dream.

There were 3,859 fans on hand to watch the 2-1 victory, a figure which is nearly treble the previous highest attendance for a women's game at the stadium.

After falling behind in the first half to a goal from Carra Jones, Church’s side fought back through goals by Ellie Lake and Katy Hosford.

The players and staff then took time out to thank the fans by posing for photographs and signing autographs, and Church hopes the combination of seeing their heroes out on the pitch and getting the chance to meet them afterwards will play a part in some of those in the stands one day being out on the field in Swansea colours.

“Those young girls that are sat in those stands today will hopefully be Swansea City players one day,” said Church.

“We’ve talked a lot about inspiring the next generation and hopefully today we have inspired that generation.

“It’s fantastic to be accessible and show that we want to grow the women’s game, and we want to be with the fans.

“Most of these players that play with us were one day those fans in the stands, let's hope that continues and that we can keep inspiring them.

“It’s been a fantastic experience, it’s had a real family feel, now we want to push on and get even more people coming to our games.”

The win sees the Swans draw level on points with Wrexham in the Genero Adran Premier, sitting below the Red Dragons on goal difference alone.

Church was delighted with the performance form his side, and felt they fully deserved three points.

“I definitely think we deserved it, we played some great football,” said Church.

“I can’t fault the players' attitudes and the way they went about things, even the players that were on the bench, they came on and added to it and just enjoyed it as much as the players who started.

“We use the word character a lot with this team, today we showed it, but for 90 minutes we were well in control.

“We were far the better team and Wrexham made it hard for us, they scored early and we were chasing it a little bit, but we did not panic so that was pleasing to see.

“Katy [Hosford] seems to love scoring here which is obviously fantastic for a Swansea City fan, for Ellie [Lake] she can definitely add that to her game, you can see that. It was a great finish and hopefully she can get a couple more this season.”
