CLASSIC MATCHES - Swans 2-1 Cardiff

29th October

With the Welsh derby fast approaching, the build-up begins to the first all-Welsh Barclays Premier League encounter.

Each day this week - right the way up until Sunday's hotly anticipated fixture - we will bring you a classic derby encounter from over the years.

Bounds' late strike seals Swansea win

Matthew Bound's dramatic last-minute match-winner, his first league strike in 46 successive appearances since his £55,000 move from Stockport County twelve months earlier, completed Swansea's rousing second half recovery.

Having been outplayed throughout the match, the Swans clung on by their fingertips as the visitors tried and failed to apply the finishing touch.

Cardiff took the lead after just four minutes through Swansea old boy John Williams, who hooked the ball home from close range following some untidy Swans defending.

The visitors came close to extending their advantage on a number of occasions but Middleton, Ford and Nugent all failed to find the net.

The turning point came on the half-hour mark when Roger Freestone made the first of two superb instinctive saves to prevent Smith from putting into his own goal.

Then, just before the half-time interval, his save from Nugent was equally crucial.

After the break, the arrival of Julian Alsop transformed the Swans from no-hopers to heroes.

Though they tested Cardiff's defence on a number of occasions, the home side had to wait until the 69th minute before equalising.

Cardiff goalkeeper Jon Hallworth made the first of two saves from Jason Smith when Martin Thomas latched on to an Alsop header, raced away from two defenders and slotted the ball past the advancing Cardiff keeper.

By then, the visitors had lost Williams, stretchered off with an arm injury - his departure weakening Cardiff's attack.

With the game in its last minute, Appleby swung in a corner that Cusack helped on to Matthew Bound. The big defender kept his composure before drilling the winner beyond Hallworth's reach.
