CLASSIC MATCHES - Swans 3-1 Cardiff

31st October

With the Welsh derby fast approaching, the build-up begins to the first all-Welsh Barclays Premier League encounter.

Each day this week - right the way up until Sunday's hotly anticipated fixture - we will bring you a classic derby encounter from over the years.

Cardiff crash to Swans 'Quickies'

Swansea City scored three goals in 11 minutes to transform this Milk Cup tie at the Vetch Field, but Cardiff were furious by the referee's decision to award the Swans a goal on the stroke of half-time, which proved to be the turning point.

The Swans almost scored from their first attack as Pascoe took advantage of an error by Vaughan to break from the halfway line and hit a 20-yard drive which Rees touched onto the crossbar.

Cardiff's Kevin Meacock worked tirelessly to create openings and, after 21 minutes, Carver forced a diving save from the Swansea keeper with a 25-yard effort from Brian Flynn's short free-kick.

The visiting side went in front after 40 minutes when Mark Farrington headed home Vaughan's centre to punish a mistake by Pascoe.

Then, just before half-time, Waddle headed on a long throw by Marustik and Colin Randell netted from 15 yards.

The linesman raised his flag, apparently to signal that a Swansea player directly in front of Mel Rees had strayed into an offside position.

However, after consultation, referee Roger Milford overruled the linesman and allowed the goal to stand.

Within five minutes of the restart, Randell, making a belated home debut after settling personal differences with John Bond, added his second goal to put the scores level on aggregate.

Rees was beaten again in the 55th minute as Waddle nodded down a diagonal cross from Tommy Hutchinson for Pascoe to force past the keeper from close range.

It put the Swans 4-3 ahead on aggregate, sending them through to the next round of the cup in emphatic style.
