CLASSIC MATCHES - Swans 3-2 Cardiff

1st November

With the Welsh derby fast approaching, the build-up begins to the first all-Welsh Barclays Premier League encounter.

Each day this week - right the way up until Sunday's hotly anticipated fixture - we will bring you a classic derby encounter from over the years.

Boxing Day pantomime!

The spectators who turned out in force at the Vetch Field saw a Boxing Day pantomime.

The Swans thoroughly deserved their victory because they were by far the more versatile side in appalling conditions.

The pitch was so bad, it would have surprised no-one if referee Clements had called the match off at half-time.

Snow and ice in the morning, followed by torrential rain made the pitch treacherous, and the players of both sides deserve credit for sticking to their tasks so manfully.

It was totally against the run of play when Cardiff went into the lead after only 10 minutes.

Farrell crossed the ball from the right, Briggs' mishit shot rebounded off the upright into the path of Ellis, who had the easy task of hitting the ball home from close range.

Three minutes later, Dilwyn John nearly punched the ball into his own net following a corner kick, but fortunately for John, the covering Harrington prevented the equaliser.

However, it didn't take long for the Swans to level the scores after piling the pressure on to Cardiff's goal.

After 39 minutes, Herbie Williams hit a low shot which spun off the wet surface, rebounding off the deceived John's chest, for the vigilant Todd to slam home.

Early in the second-half, McLaughlin gave the Swans a deserved lead with a curling effort from the edge of the area.

Then Ellis netted his and Cardiff's second goal to level things up after a fortuitous rebound off the post.

However, Pound netted his first Football League goal in the closing stages to give the Swans the win.
